The answers
Give yourself a point for each of these that you spotted:
-
- Most of the images have no alternative text – ok when the pictures are for decoration only but not all of the images are for decoration
- Poor colour contrast throughout the site
- Using italics for key site content such as menu items
- Embedded video with no captions
- No accessibility statement on the site
- Serif font is hard to read
- Rolling text which is impossible to read. Yuck!!
- Really bad graph where colour is used to provide meaning (with no alternative) and graph has really bad labels and no alt tag
- Links which provide no information about where they link to and are repeated (bad for screen readers – ‘click here’)
- Data used without any sort of reference to where the data came from
- Distracting backgrounds
- Some URLs don’t describe what’s in the page/location ie ‘sample-page’
- Sometimes heading levels used in wrong order
- Poorly written content – badly structured, unclear with typos
- All caps text is hard to read
- Table used for image layout
- Responsiveness is broken
- Messages in red that shout at users
- Poor navigation
- Endlessly looping animation
- Skip to content functionality not available for keyboard navigation
There are likely others…. a bonus point for each!
